As the last issue closed, Wolverine found himself completely submerged under frozen, icy cold water by Omega Red and an army of Vampires led by none other than Dracula. So, as WOLVERINE #5 by Ben Percy opens, Wolverine has become a prisoner of the Great Dracula! Will Logan find a way to elude capture? Or, will he find himself allied with an unlikely band of misfits in order to survive? Let’s slash into this week’s WOLVERINE and see if Logan can escape before he turns into a blood bank!

Readers, this was a rather interesting issue involving Vampires, everyone’s favorite Wolverine, and his abilities effects on the undead bloodsuckers. One aspect of the issue that I thought was extremely clever is that Percy deviated from the predictable and used Wolverine in a different, more creative light. Now, the most disappointing part of the issue is actually the lack of Omega Red and Dracula in the story this week. The narrative actually focuses more on guest stars than it does the two bloodthirsty villains, which the introductory pages insinuate otherwise.
Overall, WOLVERINE #5 is definitely fast-paced and filled with action, as well as some outstanding illustrations and splash pages by Viktor Bogdanovic. However, as fun and entertaining as this week’s story was, it just felt like I’ve seen this story before, whether on TV or in a movie. Wolverine’s connection to the Vampires was definitely new and clever. However, the aspects involving the undead bloodsuckers felt overly familiar like I’ve seen this shtick before.
WOLVERINE #5 certainly had its moments. From a frozen Logan popsicles to Vampire hunting, this comic was definitely fun with Segovia’s art has a highlight of the issue. However, it just didn’t have as much excitement as the prior four issues. Don’t get me wrong; this issue wasn’t bad. WOLVERINE #5 just wasn’t as good as the prior issues in Percy’s run. Regardless, it’s very difficult to hit home run after home run. Every once in a while you have to take the single to move the players around the bases. And that my friends, is this issue in a nutshell. Give it a read and let me know what you think!
