Jonathan Hickman’s Greatest Hits

With what appears to be a shutdown of new Marvel titles for at least two weeks, this reviewer has used the opportunity to catch up on some old titles, classic trades, and some graphic novels that have been collecting dust for God knows how long. And during this time, what I’ve grown to realize as I meander through my old back issues and trades is that there are two types of comic readers.

Type 1: They read all about the character they adore regardless of the writer. Think of it like loving a football team even if your favorite player moves on to greener pastures.

Type 2: They read everything from the writer regardless of the character. So in this example using our sports analogy, it would be the equivalent of following a player like Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, or even Tom Brady and NOT the team they played originally or for most of their career.

Now, in terms of the sporting world, I bleed Green… Kelly Green to be exact! I’m a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan. Sorry if that offends any of my Twitter followers exponentially but there is no changing that family dynamic. However, in the realm of comics, I find myself more drawn to good stories which in turn is directly related to the writer. Meaning, I find that I’m very much Type 2. I follow the writer. Sure, there are characters I love like the next person. But, many of the reasons I jumped ship to Marvel years ago now from the other “company” was because the characters I adored just didn’t have great stories anymore. Ultimately, the writers weren’t doing it for me, which draws me to the point of this article… Jonathan Hickman!

After digging through my stack of dusty old graphic novels, I noticed an association between my collection and similar writers. One of those writers that stood above the rest was none other than Jonathan Hickman! His stories have always been clever, imaginative, creative, and well researched. He’s thorough, applicable, and makes sure to tie up all loose ends. Hickman’s style lends itself to heavy, and sometimes complicated, moments that may force fans to reread past issues again. But likewise, explanations and understanding almost always surface before a Hickman narrative is complete. Additionally, he almost always grabs fantastic artists to join his team making his books not only thought-provoking but also beautiful to look at and overly captivating.

That said, the biggest drawback to a Hickman story is that they are oftentimes long-winded and filled with trifle moments AT THAT TIME. Meaning, at that moment, aspects of his stories seem unimportant to the narrative and wasteful. Therefore, readers unfamiliar with his style tend to bail before his story is over because they lack the patience needed for a Hickman narrative. So, rest assured anyone interested in venturing down a Hickman story, hang in there! And if you can’t feel the burden, or lack the required patience, just forget about Hickman single issues and wait for his trades to come out, which leads me to the meat and cheese of this article.

Let’s take a look at Jonathan Hickman’s Greatest Hits. Below is a list of MUST READ Jonathan Hickman Trades, Graphic Novels, digital comics, and stories that every comic fan should read. In my professional/ unprofessional opinion, these are fantastic stories that highlight everything Hickman has to offer to the world of literature. Links to each Trade/ Graphic Novel/ digital copy are sprinkled throughout so you can get your hands on these narratives while you’re stuck at home without New Marvel Releases for at least another two weeks. Plus, this may give new Hickman readers that jumped on HOXPOX and Dawn if X a taste of what’s in store with everyone’s favorite mutants. So, take a look and let me know what you think.
