Someone or some group of mercenaries is formulating moves against Logan’s old unit Team X… and it’s leaving corpses and stolen artifacts in its wake. A quandary unfolds as WOLVERINE snags a whiff of his old cohort, David North, known as the one and only Maverick! Let’s slash into this over-sized 350th solo issue of everyone’s favorite stocky Canadian as Benjamin Percy kicks off his next arc of WOLVERINE.

Readers get some intriguing background information in this issue that adds some extra layers to Percy’s tale that involves Jeff Bannister, Omega Red, and Wolverine. Something is happening that’s somehow connecting the U.S. Government, Wolverine’s old team, Maverick, Russia, and Dracula. Percy does a fabulous job of sprinkling in just enough kernels to keep fans interested without giving away too many details or making the story seem convoluted.

This WOLVERINE fan finds the Omega Red/ Russia/ Dracula angle the most engaging. Plus, Percy dangles some carrots of doubt right out in front of the reader’s nose making us question some of the past issues causing this reviewer to reread some back issues. Fans, if a writer can get a reader to look back at prior issues to see if they missed something or to find possible clues they missed, then the writer is doing his job. Furthermore, it shows the level of investment from both the writer and reader, which comes through in spades this issue.

If there was one flaw in this week’s WOLVERINE it would simply be the lack of Maverick. My goodness, the cover is amazing. However, it will lead readers to believe they’re getting a mouth full of Agent Zero, which isn’t the case at all. Nonetheless, by the time the issue concludes, I think future WOLVERINE issues will have Maverick front and center.

FINAL THOUGHTS

There are battles… but not gutsy, balls to the wall, savagery. Readers will get some black-ops, covert action with some minor cameo action sequences that will be just enough to wet your whistle. However, what we do get is fun, quick, and intriguing. This reviewer left wanting more Maverick and more Omega Red than he got in this week’s installment of WOLVERINE. Nevertheless, readers will leave excited by the multiple beginning threads of what looks like a nicely woven tapestry in our future. Furthermore, this is a great issue to add WOLVERINE to your pull list if you’ve been tossing around the idea. I highly recommend adding it to your stack now before the story gets wings and takes off.
