I can’t say I am a big captain marvel fan or that I even know much about the character at all. That is one of the big reasons I’ve been looking forward to this book since it was announced…the other big(ger) reason being Kelly Thompson writing it. So, am I still excited after reading the first issue? Yes, yes I am…

The issue opens with a huge, action-packed fight scene. It’s a cool and very cinematic cold open that also has Jessica Drew so…awesome! They are fighting a Kraken and exchanging quips and while it’s a nice bit of recent recap, it serves more to set the fun tone of the book.

That continues when Tony Stark (kind of) shows up on cleanup duty and reminds Carol they have a date…well, meeting later.

Kelly thompson does such a good job in this beginning section. Whether you know Carol and jessica doesnt matter as Thompson fills in the details in such a natural and unforced way that I wish other writers would take notice of.

Continuing at Stark Industries, we start to fill-in the roster of the book with some more recap, an introduction (to some including me) of Hazmat and a reunion.

Going from there, things pick up again as Carol is juggling a bunch of things, including a villain whose agenda felt a little forced, and the issue ends with a crazy cliffhanger that certainly has me intrigued.

I am fully on board with this book after this #1 issue. Kelly Thompson balances the action with the character moments and recap that made this oversized issue fly by. I was upset it was over and need the next issue now. With only one minor quibble and outstanding art throughout, this is a book I can easily recommend.

Final thoughts:

If you have even the slightest interest in Captain Marvel, pick this book up! Kelly Thompson gets everyone up to speed in an action packed issue that’s fun, exciting and looks great. Highly recommended.

  1. I completely agree with you Jim, Kelly Thompson does a great job! She makes Carol fun again. That last mini series was seriously depressing. Glad to see the fun side of Capt Marvel again! If you’re becoming a Kelly Thompson fan, I highly recommend Mr. & Mrs. X there might even be a Laura appearance in one of the issues. Maybe in #6 when Rogue & Remy throw a dinner party! Cool thing by the artist David Lopez the outfit Laura wears to the party is the same outfit as the cover of first issue of the 2010 X-23 series!!!
