Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY & Geoffrey Thorne give readers a new Slingers Team, but even if you are in the know, you might still feel like you missed a bunch of issues going into this issue. Thorne does a really bad job of setting things up here as Hobie Brown, now the Hornet, has his crowdfunding business bought out by the Beyond Corporation? Why? To get Hobie to suit up and go steal files from Beyond, that’s why. Every bit of this issue is forced, but in a way that isn’t even explained well.

After Hobie shows that, once again, Beyond’s security is shit, he is followed home by Dusk who is looking for fellow Slinger, Ricochet. Geoffrey Thorne barely introduces anyone in this issue, but again forces the story forward in ridiculous ways, but at this point, I could barely muster up a reason to care.

The issue continues with a confusing fight that ends with the old hand through a portal pulling down the convenient “Shut Down” lever. It all ends with Ricochet revealing he works for Beyond’s superhero program and Hobie being offered a position as well.

Final Thoughts:

Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY was not only inconsequential to the overall Beyond story but was just not a good read by itself. It felt like a backdoor pilot for a Slinger’s book I can only pray never happens. I liked the art enough, but the character work and story were just plain bad.
