As MARAUDERS #17 continues after the events of X OF SWORDS, it appears as though Gerry Duggan has formulated a means of repurposing the Hellfire Club moving forward. This week begins with a rematch between Storm and Calisto. Let’s dive into MARAUDERS #17 to see if this rematch is exactly what it’s cracked up to be.

The preview states this issue of MARAUDERS as a rematch… and I beg to differ. It’s not so much a rematch as it is an honorary and noble display by two mutants with the utmost respect for one another. It’s more doing someone a solid than a rematch. However, without spoiling too much, I think this issue was merely set up associated with Storm needing a replacement for herself within the MARAUDERS team. To find the perfect fit, something needs to transpire this issue that will make a ton of sense before the issue concludes. So, if you’ve been reading multiple X-MEN titles, this will have meaning once you read it. However, if for some reason you only read MARAUDERS (which I doubt), this issue will be very confusing.

Now, there is a side story with Captain Kate, Emma Frost, and her crew that honestly doesn’t seem very interesting to me. Most items related to Verendi haven’t stuck well with this reviewer and that’s essentially what we’re dealing with here. It’s not so much that I think they’re poorly excused. It’s just that they have never really appealed to me. Ultimately, I’m glad to see Kitty and Lockheed back in the fold. Nonetheless, the future arc doesn’t seem to entice me, especially since it appears to be surrounding another dinner party. Can I just say, what the $&@$ is up with the X-MEN titles and dinner parties? It happened early on with Magneto and Xavier in X-MEN. Then, it happened again within X OF SWORDS. And now, it appears as though Duggan is on that same path. If that’s the current trajectory of this title, then I think it’s more overdone than my Great Uncle’s steak. But, we shall see.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Without divulging too much information and spoiling this issue rotten, what I can say is that it appears as though Duggan is on the cusp of adding and subtracting some members to MARAUDERS. Why? I think Storm “may” be heading to the X-MEN team that Scott and Jean are putting together. That said, she needs a strong and formidable replacement… enter Calisto. But, as you’ll read, something’s missing. So, Duggan spends the issue logically thrusting this ship forward and drops its anchor at the next destination after their vengeance on Sebastian Shaw, which just so happens to be the Verendi. Maybe you’re more excited than I? That’s fine. Still, I was hoping for something brand spanking new after X OF SWORDS. Let me know what you guys think and God bless!
