Daredevil #6 gives Matt Murdock insight into his current troubles with the Seven Deadly Sins, which sets up a fight with the latest host of Wrath.

Is Daredevil #6 Good?

I think Saladin Ahmed intended Daredevil #6 to be more profound than it turned out. It’s not a bad issue, and it answers a key question asked at the beginning of Ahmed’s run (who is sending the seven deadly sins after Daredevil?), but the answer is and isn’t what you expect. More on that in a minute.

When last we left Daredevil, Matt spent a day on the town on a seriocomic food tour with She-Hulk before he figured out that Jennifer was infected with Gluttony. After a brief tussle and a few prayers of exorcism, all is right with the world.

Now, Doctor Strange pays Matt Murdock a visit to help him reconcile the truth behind his demon problem. Specifically, there is no mastermind behind the demonic attacks. The demons simply followed Matt out of Hell. After a dimensional push and a surreal face-to-face with Satan, Matt dons his white Daredevil duds and seeks out the leader of The Heat but finds a Wrath-possessed Wolverine waiting for him instead.

“Wait! That’s it? All the demonic mystery is just about demons following Matt when he escaped from Hell?!?” you might ask. Yes, that’s right. No spiritual conspiracy or grand plan in the making here. The most shocking part of this revelation is just how unimaginative it is.

What’s great about Daredevil #6? The highlight of this issue is Aaron Kuder’s mind-bending, surreal imagery Matt experiences after stepping through the portal conjured by Doctor Strange. If you’ve ever wondered what a hallucination that’s trippy yet accessible looks like, Kuder nails it.

What’s not so great about Daredevil #6? Frankly, Ahmed’s seven deadly sins explanation is weak. Further, the whole scenario is contingent on understanding how Matt escaped Hell in the first place, which is the question that’s gotten no attention in this run.

Bits and Pieces

Daredevil #6 continues Father Matthew’s fight against the Seven Deadly Sins by forcing him to accept why they’re attacking in the first place. The answer just might whelm you. That said, Kuder’s surreal art is strong, Daredevil’s white armor makes a return appearance, and the next victim of possession arrives for a solid cliffhanger.

6.5/10
