LEGACY #248

Plot Summary

We open in the present at a limbo-like location called the Hoard. Moon Knight is bound in chains and struggling to break free. A disembodied voice is taunting Marc and when he asks who it is, the voice replies “your owner!” Marc then remembers being stabbed through the chest by Carver and in a cool reveal we learn that the taunting voice is the sword Carver used to run Marc through. There’s a great full-page image depicting the moment of death by artist Devalya Pramanik. In fact it’s worth mentioning that the whole issue looks gorgeous! I’m so happy to see Pramanik back on art.

We are given a brief backstory of how Carver came into possession of the sword. She was on a mission in Vanaheim when her agent partner Simms was killed by a hellish creature. Moments later she followed him. The sword calls to Carver and reveals its name: Ginnarr the Hoarding Blade. It makes a deal with her. If she wields the sword, she gets to live again. But there’s a catch-there’s always a catch! Carver must use the sword to feed Ginnar souls as the blade has a developed a taste for them.

Moon Knight continues his dialog with Ginnarr the Hoarding Blade. The sword reveals its true form to Marc, a dragon: “Look upon my majesty. Look upon my hoard of which you are the latest addition.” Instead of gold or treasure Ginnarr hoards souls. It’s clearly enjoying boasting to Moon Knight and is very surprised when he asks it to surrender.

This was Moon Knight’s plan all along. He has played both Carver and the dragon. “I am a fist of Khonshu. I am son to a collector of souls.” And in a stunning double-page spread we see Khonshu manifest before Ginnarr the dragon. The Egyptian god is furious and is about to slay the dragon when Moon Knight asks his “father” to show mercy. “I am a knight and a knight requires a sword.” It’s a brilliant line and the build-up and delivery are excellent.

Now Moon Knight wields the Hoarding Blade. He points it at a shocked Carver and demands she tell him how and where to find Achilles Fairchild. And that’s where the issue ends.

Sharp Points!

This is a beautifully illustrated issue and I will keep on singing the praises of artist Dev Pramanik and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg. Get hold of a physical copy if you can. I also really enjoyed the fantasy themes in this story with its dragon and magical blade. The way writer Jed Mackay gradualy reveals Moon Knight’s plan is a masterclass in comic book storytelling.

Dull Points!

It’s a pretty quick read, so if you are looking for boxes and boxes of narration you should look elesewhere.

Final Thoughts

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #8 is an almost perfect comic book and one of the best single issues I’ve read this year. Every member of this creative team should be appauded for the obvious craft and love they have put into this comic. It gave me a wonderful reading experience and reminded me why I love this medium so much.
