Immortal Thor #4 finds Thor, Loki, and Sif enacting a plan to stop the relentless return of Toranos.

Is Immortal Thor #4 Good?

Immortal Thor #4 is like a diet soda. It’s got plenty of pop moments. It looks good. And it feels good. But there’s no substance to it besides the novelty of fizzy bubbles tickling your nose.

When last we left Thor, he managed to think until his thinker was all thunked out trying to solve Loki’s puzzle that would allow the God of Thunder to escape a distant world. Thor eventually unraveled the riddle of his trickster brother to fashion a new weapon that would give him the power to return home and face Toranos before the Utgard-thor reached Earth.

Now, Thor hatches a plan to confront Toranos by assembling his most respected allies and granting them all the power of Thor, albeit briefly, to form the Thor Corps, and that’s it.

“Wait!>” What do you mean ‘that’s it?'” you might wonder. Yep, that’s it. Thor approaches an assortment of allies to gather them in one spot and grant them the power of Thor long enough to form the Thor Corps and confront Toranos. No, Ewing didn’t get confused and begin writing a Shazam! comic (or did he?).

What’s great about Immortal Thor #4? The concept of a Thor Corps is fun, the way Thor goes about assembling his team is well done, and the prospect of Toranos fighting the Thor Corps is intriguing. In short, it’s a cool setup.

What’s not so great about Immortal Thor #4? There’s not much meat to this issue other than the setup of the Thor Corps. It’s all flashy setup but not much else. For a comic with a $4.99 cover price, readers may feel cheated.

How’s the art? The art’s great. Not much happens in this issue, but Cóccolo at least makes ‘not much’ look good.

Bits and Pieces

Immortal Thor #4 is all setup and flash for the sake of assembling a new team (the Thor Corps), but there’s no meat on this bone. The art is great, and Thor’s recruitment choices make sense, but this issue amounts to little more than a prologue.
