Invincible Iron Man #10 marks the beginning of the end for the Orchis/Mutant conflict, and it all starts with a Vegas wedding?!?

Is Invincible Iron Man #10 Good?

Invincible Iron Man #10 is a welcome respite in an otherwise lackluster series by Gerry Duggan. It’s too far to say this issue was fun, but I was entertained. As long as you temper your expectations, you’ll probably be mildly entertained, too.

When last we left Tony and his not-so-armored friends, Rhodey was getting the stuffing knocked out of him in a Texas Prison, Emma Frost went undercover as Tony’s assistant, and Tony lost everything except one suit of stealth armor and his wits.

Now, Tony keeps appearances as a retired man and the new Black King of the Hellfire Club while he devises a new armor powerful enough to stop Feilong’s Iron Sentinels. When shows up announced at a Club mixer, Emma, disguised as Hazel, charges in for the kill, but Tony pulls her aside and improvises a plan that gets them what they both want – a wedding.

Feilong shows up to the hastily scheduled Vegas wedding, as Tony predicted, giving Emma the chance to get Feilong alone long enough to enter his mind and pull out all the information they need. Feilong, as it turns out, has a lot of secrets Emma and Tony need to turn the Orchis overthrow around.

What’s great about Invincible Iron Man #10? Despite their complete lack of romantic chemistry, Duggan successfully creates a contentious charm in the relationship between Emma and Tony. They don’t “like” each other, but they don’t mind working together because they’re alike in a lot of ways, and they have intersecting goals. As contrived as the wedding is (but contrived in a way that makes sense for the story), you could picture Emma and Tony doing more together.

What’s not so great about Invincible Iron Man #10? Desperate people are dangerous people. For all the planning that went into wiping out the Mutant presence on Earth, you’d think Feilong would be more guarded against attacks at any moment. Feilong should be one of the smartest and most cautious guys around, considering how many dangerous people hate him, and yet, Duggan allows Feilong to act with recklessness to make the story work. If I were Feilong, I wouldn’t go anywhere in public without some kind of armed guards nearby with mutant detection tech.

How’s the art? Pretty good considering there’s very little action in this issue. You get a prison fight with Rhodey in the beginning, and some armor action when Tony breaks into a Stane facility to steal equipment, but the rest of the issue is characters talking. Therefore, give credit to Frigeri for making a dialog-heavy issue somewhat engaging.

Bits and Pieces

Invincible Iron Man #10 presents the much-advertised wedding between Tony and Emma in a story that extends their covert operation into new and somewhat amusing directions. The wedding is contrived as heck, but it makes sense for the story Duggan’s telling, and surprisingly, Emma and Tony make for an interesting couple. Marvel made a bigger deal out of the wedding than it deserves, but the story has potential for what Emma and Tony can do together.
