The Invincible Iron Man #11 finds Tony Stark and Emma Frost on their “honeymoon” to Hawaii as a cover for Tony to get his hands on the nearest stockpile of Mysterium.

Is The Invincible Iron Man #11 Good?

The Invincible Iron Man #11 is okay. It’s not as good as issue #10 for one specific reason, but it’s a perfectly serviceable issue that gets Tony where he needs to go in his fight against Orchis.

When last we left Tony and Emma, they hatched a plan to get married to keep up the appearance that Tony was officially retired from work and the superhero business. The impromptu Vegas wedding was attended by one witness, Feilong, whom Tony manipulated into coming. Emma took advantage of the opportunity to ransack Feilong’s mind for all of Orchis’s plans and the information Feilong absorbed from Howard Stark’s old records before they were destroyed.

Now, Tony and Emma head for a Hawaii honeymoon to keep up appearances while Tony uses his stealth armor to visit Krakoa and collect the largest stockpile of Mysterium available. Succeeding, Tony puts the metal through its paces (with the help of super friends) to determine if Mysterium is just what he needs to take Orchis down.

If you’re wondering “That’s it?”, no, that’s not it. Tony’s trip to Krakoa leads to a fight with hyper-intelligent Orchis apes (think Gorilla Grodd). The apes certainly give the Orchis ranks some whimsy, but it seems silly, given the seriousness of the situation. The only reason to include the apes I could think of would be to give Tony a reason to have a battle, but this is a weird excuse to make that happen.

What’s great about The Invincible Iron Man #11? There’s nothing particularly great about this comic. It’s a perfectly serviceable setup to get Mysterium in Tony’s hands for whatever comes next. Except for the Grodd fight, the entire issue goes by the numbers with very little drama or surprises.

What’s not so great about The Invincible Iron Man #11? The reason this issue is just serviceable is because it lacks tension and surprises. The Grodd fight is weird, but it’s the only thing that comes close to a surprise. Everything else is a bland, perfunctory plot development.

How’s the art? Andrea Di Vito’s art is pretty great. Admittedly, Di Vito doesn’t have much to do in such a bland issue, but the brief bits of action are pulled off well.

Bits and Pieces

The Invincible Iron Man #11 is a serviceable, bland issue that gets Mysterium in Tony’s hands without any surprises or dramatic tension. If all you get out of this issue is that Tony now has Mysterium, you could skip it and not miss a thing.
