Daredevil #13 sends Matt Murdock to the fight of his (after)life when he confronts the Beast in Hell to save the souls of his deceased friends. Will Matt’s faith be strong enough to do what must be done?

Is It Good?

Once again, Chip Zdarsky swings for the fences in Daredevil #13, and Daredevil fans are all the better for it. I won’t go so far as to say this is a perfect comic, but give the creators an A+ for effort and a solid A for execution.

When last we left Daredevil, he tricked Elektra into killing him near the portal to Hell so his soul could enter the Beast’s domain in a bid to rescue the imprisoned souls of his family and friends. Now, Matt endures illusions and demons to reach his final destination, but a shocking revelation threatens to overwhelm Matt’s faith one last time.

Yep, Zdarsky isn’t pulling any punches in this issue as Matt Murdock fights his way through Hell and back (literally) to save the souls of his loved ones. Zdarsky’s plot progression, pacing, dialog, narration, and action beats are admirable. Readers are given one last twist when we learn the Fist has its own monstrous master, sending Matt into another crisis of faith, and Checchetto’s art is god-tier-level stuff (pun intended).

Admittedly, the reboot into issue #1 got off to a rocky start with an enemy that can predict the future, thereby influencing Daredvil’s life for years, but since dropping that nonsense, Zdarsky picked up steam to make this series the most exciting and potentially impactful it’s been in years.

To be clear, the ending feels like a very permanent ending for the Man Without Fear, but this issue is the penultimate in Zdarsky’s run. We’ll see what happens in the finale, but I’m looking forward to it.

Bits and Pieces

Daredevil #13 takes the phrase “go big or go home” to heart with a massive fight in the pit of Hell to save Daredevil’s friends. The writing and art are beyond reproach, and the ending sets an impossibly high bar heading into the finale.
