Magnificent Ms. Marvel is one of my favorite books right now and Saladin Ahmed is doing such a fine job of continuing what G. Willow Wilson set up before him. I look forward to it each month and now that it’s here, is this issue any good? Let’s find out…
The issue opens where we left off the last one…Kamala’s suit has formed into its own thing called “Stormranger” and is talking crap like Arnold before he learned how to be cool and hip in Terminator 2.
So, before the Stormranger can kill Mr. Hyde, Kamala jumps into action and the fight is on! I’d love to say that Kamala kicks butt right away, but that is not the case as Stormranger is more ruthless and just plain bigger and badder than her.
She does manage to get Hyder out of harm’s way and then almost gives up her secret identity (take that Superman!) but after meeting up with Bruno, the fight with her glitchy suit is back on. It’s all about Stormranger detecting threats and unfortunately, Kamala is in the crosshairs by the end. The issue ends with Kamala taking a bit of an impromptu swim and her suit going off to eliminate a bunch of people who may or may not deserve it.
This was a good issue for fans, but it’s definitely not a good jumping on point for those wanting to give it a peek. I do wish we would find out how Kamala’s father is and even get back to the KISS, but this Stormranger suit is interesting enough, I just hope it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.
I always love the art in this book and this issue is no exception. Minkyu Jung kicks total ass and the book is all the better for that rump kicking!
This a good issue that gave readers a look at Kamala’s crazy glitched out Kree costume as it punched, kicked, threatened and threw our hero around for 20+ pages. I would like to get to some of the really big loose ends with Kamala and her family, but the art by Minkyu Jung was great and I am a fan of just about anything Kamala does. Take that into consideration if you are on the fence.
