Deadpool/Wolverine #3, by Marvel on 3/19/25, finds Wolverine getting to the truth behind Deadpool’s mind control, while Stryfe’s plan for Legacy 2.0 takes on an undead quality.

Is Deadpool/Wolverine #3 Good?

Recap

In Deadpool/Wolverine #2, Confronted by Maverick and ONE agents in pursuit of Stryfe, who had recently escaped a S.H.I.E.L.D. cold storage facility, Wolverine also fled in search of Wade but ran head first into a herd of kaiju, each of them pumped full of Legacy 2.0. After a skirmish, Logan found Deadpool atop the kaiju when Wade somehow came out of his controlled state with no memory of his mission or commander. What is Stryfe up to, and is Deadpool under his control?

Plot Synopsis

In Deadpool/Wolverine #3, Logan tortures Wade to get to the truth, and the merc with a mouth just might like it. In the previous issue, Wolverine glimpsed that who or what may be controlling Deadpool can be overridden with pain, so he slashes Deadpool to bring the “other” consciousness to the front, and it works. The person pulling Deadpool’s strings is none other than Stryfe.

Why? Stryfe believes an apocalypse will end all life on Earth, so he needs to create a controlled Apocalypse using Legacy 2.0 to prevent a larger one. Think of it as an intentional forest fire to clear away the dead wood. Stryfe was also in control of Wolverine at one time, but the control link is no longer active due to Wolverine’s new body.

Meanwhile, Maverick reports to Talyn and ONE that his unit was wiped out. They order him back to base for study because the sample of Legacy 2.0 Maverick delivered to them previously has interesting properties. The issue ends with Stryfe using Legacy 2.0 to create a zombie hoard from cemetery corpses to serve as soldiers and spread his Legacy 2.0 virus throughout the world.

First Impressions

Deadpool/Wolverine #3 is short, sweet, and to the point. Benjamin Percy uses the issue to answer more than one open question and set the stage for the titular heroes and fight against an impending Apocalypse. Consider my expectations met and slightly exceeded.

How’s the Art?

Joshua Cassara’s meaty art looks fantastic. Cassara infuses every panel with gobs of detail, particularly on the character costumes, and gives you just enough gore to make the story bloody. Cassara’s visuals match what you’d expect to see in a comic starring Deadpool and Wolverine, presented in above-average quality and detail.

What’s great about Deadpool/Wolverine #3?

Percy’s script tells you everything you need to know about Stryfe’s plan, including the how and the why, by furthering the story through the action. This issue serves as a great example of furthering the story while keeping (almost) everything contained to one room.

What’s not great about Deadpool/Wolverine #3?

There’s a minor character nitpick in the last act of the issue. Stryfe appears in astral form before Wolverine and Deadpool to explain his master plan. As soon as Wolverine sees Stryfe, he attacks, which is something Wolverine would never do because he would know by the lack of scent and other physical sense attributes that Stryfe wasn’t there in the flesh. It’s a minor quibble but an annoying one when you see it.

Final Thoughts

Deadpool/Wolverine #3 is the issue that explains it all when Wolverine tortures Deadpool to find out who is controlling him, with unexpectedly successful results. Benjamin Percy’s short and sweet script dispels several open questions and sets the stage for the fight to come, and Joshua Cassara’s bloody, violent art looks great.
