Wolverine #3, by Marvel Comics on 11/20/24, continues Wolverine’s fight for the soul of a teenager infected with the Wendigo curse. Meanwhile, possessed Cyber drafts an ally.

Is Wolverine #3 Good?

Writer Saladin Ahmed gives readers a little bit of everything on the surface in Wolverine #3. You get plenty of claw-slashing action, a lot of Wolverin’es thoughts, a basic conclusion 9sorta), and an update on Cyber. This isn’t the best X-Title since Brevoort’s From The Ashes era began, but it at least reads like it’s going somewhere.

When last we left Logan in Wolverine #2, the hairy one encountered a teenager named Leonard infected with the curse of the Wendigo in the Canadian woods. Wolverine figured he could help the boy, although history has proven the curse to be unbreakable. The issue concluded with Wendigo’s bloodlust overtaking Leonard’s human will.

In Wolverine #3, Logan fights Leonard, aka Wendigo, without trying to kill him. Wendigo is more aggressive after getting a taste of blood, but Wolverine can see subtle hints that Leonard’s mind is still resisting. The fight gets hairier when Department H soldiers arrive.

Wolverine splits the focus of the Dept. H soldiers by drawing their fire away from Wendigo. He scurries up a tree like a squirrel (Yes, that’s a line in the comic) and chops down a section of the tree on top of the soldiers. Cleared of distractions, Wolverine leaps onto Wendigo’s back and knocks him out with a chokehold.

The issue ends with Wolverine giving a warning to the last-arriving soldier before dragging Wendigo away and the possessed Cyber paying Lady Deathstrike a visit to Japan to spread the infection.

What’s great about Wolverine #3?

Superficially, this is a perfectly fine issue. Saladin Ahmed gives longtime fans of Wolverine exactly who you would expect – claw-slashing action in the snowy, Canadian woods, macho dialog, and a reasonably complete ending. Plus, Cyber’s exploits get an update that increases the mystery factor significantly.

What’s not great about Wolverine #3?

The plot is super-thin. Wolverine fights, he wins (naturally), and that’s it. If not for the last bit about Cyber visiting Lady Deathstrike to inform readers about a bigger problem growing in the background, there would be nothing special or memorable about this issue.

Further, Logan’s inner monologue is sometimes excessive. There’s no need for him to describe every panel.

How’s the Art?

Martín Cóccolo has the enviable task of submitting an action-heavy issue, and he delivers. The fight is well done, and Bryan Valenza’s colors are amazing. That said, Cóccolo’s choice to give Wendigo excessively large tusks looks awkward and unwieldy in several panels. If there’s a next time, Cóccolo would do well to scale the tusks back to something more manageable.

Final Thoughts

Wolverine #3 is an action-heavy but plot-thin issue that puts Wolverine in a three-way fight between Wendigo and Department H soldiers. Saladin Ahmed ticks all the boxes for a basic Wolverine fight, and the art from Martín Cóccolo looks amazing.
