Coming into this series, only knowledge I had on the Guardians were from the movies and the first few volumes in the Bendis run. When I heard that Donny Cates was on this run I got excited especially coming off of his Venom and Cosmic Ghost Rider book. And it has yet to get me head over heels! Liking it, but not loving it like his other books. Hoping after this first story, we can get more about this new team. Rocket is my favorite member and as much as I am wondering what his deal is, I would prefer to know more about this team that I should be invested in. Let’s dig in and see what we have here…

We start the issue what seems to be a few minutes past when last issue ended, with Quill getting blasted by a laser. Thankfully it was revealed that he had body armor on and he only broke all of his ribs. As well learn that Gamora is gone. While Peter tries to come up with a plan, we get a surprise ally of Beta Ray, none other than, Lockjaw. Who I will admit, was very surprised to see him. Did not read any of the Death of the Inhuman mini series, but now I am quite curious to see if Beta Ray had an impact role in the book.

We then see a scene that took place earlier in the day, when the Dark Guardians brings Gamora to Ero’s. In doing so we learn that Wraith was in it for some information on Knull. Nice job Cates on setting the stones for another book of yours. As Eros orders Gladiator to kill Gamora, he gets attacked by Hela. She shows her power by wrecking havoc on Ghost Rider and putting him in his place. The Dark Guardians realized that they have been bested and try and give Gamora up to them, that is until the truth comes out… Eros is the one who Thanos put his conscious in.

We then get back to the present as the Guardians arrive on the ship just in time to see Gamora devastated by the return of her father. In which she has informed them that Hela, the Black Order, and Thanos have to be stopped.

Final Thoughts

This book was a very quick read! Unfortunately, wanted to get more about the team we have but only ones who talked were the ones who have been doing most of the talk so far in this story. They are few characters who I know nothing about that I was actually looking forward to get invested in. I will admit the page with Cosmic Ghost Rider about to lay waste did look wicked! Hoping to see more of him. The art on some panels looked good while others looked alright, nothing I would brag about. The twist kind of saw coming. Again hoping this book gets it’s groove after this first story gets done.

7/10
