Superior Avengers #2, by Marvel on 5/21/25, pulls back the curtain on the team’s top-secret invention, but is it enough to stop Doom before he destroys this reality?
Is Superior Avengers #2 Good?
Recap
When we last left the newly-formed team in Superior Avengers #1, we learned Doom’s son, Kristoff, gathered a version of heroes from across the multiverse who came from a reality where Doom’s rule led to a utopia on Earth. The team’s public introduction went well. Secretly, the team began hoarding tech and weapons in the Negative Zone’s Prison 42 to destroy Doom before he destroyed this reality as alt-Doom destroyed theirs.
Plot Synopsis
In Superior Avengers #2, we learn the future under Doom isn’t so rosy. The issue begins with the Superior Avengers arriving in the Negative Zone to deliver a small object containing Arcane Energy that Ghost pilfered. Why? Every object or villain the Superior Avengers capture is taken to Prison 42 to power up what they call an Arcane Warhead as an ultimate weapon against Doom.
In a flashback, we see how the team invaded Doomstadt to defeat Doom and break into his magic vaults to steal all his Arcane Objects to fix the world. Sadly, the vaults were empty because the alternate Doom destroyed them. Alt-Doom died, taking the magic of the world with him.
Now, the team completes missions around the world while Kristoff participates in multiple news interviews to hype up the Superior Avengers to the public. The team’s latest mission takes them to the Yucatan Peninsula to fight Diablo after the villain escaped from the Raft in One World Under Doom #3. The Superior Avengers defeat Diablo quickly and spirits him to Prison 42 to quickly drain his Arcane Power before sending him off to Doom’s prions on Earth.
The issue ends with Killmonger getting frisky with Kristoff.
First Impressions
Superior Avengers #2 is okay but not as engaging as issue #1. Steve Foxe lays out what the team is building in the Negative Zone, which could be interesting, but the timing of certain events is out of sync with the One World Under Doom event, and the rest of the issue reads like filler.
How’s the Art?
Luca Maresca and Kyle Holtz turn in a perfect set of visuals to show off the Arcane Warhead, depict what the end of Earth looks like in an alternate reality, and set the stage for a massive confrontation. Holtz’s style is significantly different than Maresca’s, but “hiding” the difference in a flashback scene that takes place in an alternate reality was a smart choice.
What’s great about Superior Avengers #2?
The big idea of Steve Foxe’s script is the revelation of something called an Arcane Warhead. What does it do? How does the team intend to use it? Will it work to defeat Doom? If so, at what cost? These are all good questions that are worth exploring.
What’s not great about Superior Avengers #2?
The one bit of action we get to see, besides the flashback, is the fight against Diablo. Sadly, the fight is too quick, and the timing doesn’t match up. By timing, I mean that Kristoff repeatedly mentions to the press at every turn that the Superior Avengers are needed because the original Avengers can’t be trusted, and even if they could be trusted, they’re gone as a result of Dormammu’s actions in One World Under Doom #4.
Hold up. That’s not right. Yes, Dormammu teleports the Avengers to a pocket dimension, but their disappearance only lasts for a few hours at most. How did a few days of time-passing in this issue occur during a battle that only lasted a short while? It doesn’t, so it looks like an internal lack of communication at Marvel bit the team yet again.

Final Thoughts
Superior Avengers #2 is a solid issue but less good than issue #1 because synergy with the One World Under Doom event is off, and at least a third of this issue is filler. Steve Fox delivers a big idea with loads of intrigue, and the art teams worked together beautifully for an excellent visual experience. However, the shortcomings put a damper on the entertainment factor.
