One World Under Doom #4, by Marvel on 5/14/25, witnesses Dormammu’s invasion of Earth with only one being standing in his way – Doctor Doom.

Is One World Under Doom #4 Good?

Recap

When we last left the Earth in Doctor Doom’s care in One World Under Doom #3, the Avengers concocted a foolish scheme to attack Doom in Latveria while the magic-wielders in their team invaded the mind of the world’s leaders to find out how Doom forced them to cede power to him. Surprise! Doom’s off-panel takeover was completely legitimate, and the Avengers got caught in a second PR scandal for staging an unprovoked attack. The issue ended with Dormammu sensing the new Sorcerer Supreme hasn’t been keeping up with the maintenance spells that protect Earth.

Plot Synopsis

In One World Under Doom #4, the heroes are all gone, so it’s just Dormammu versus Doom. The issue begins where the final panels from issue #3 left off. All of Earth’s heroes suddenly disappear, sent to a “rapidly shrinking pocket dimension,” while Dormammu invades Earth. Only Doom remains to stop him. Sensing a challenging fight, Doom casts three spells whose purpose we’ll see later.

And then they fight. Dormammu and Doom attack each other with equal ferocity, but it’s clear the balance of power is in Dormammu’s favor. The first spell finishes, protecting the Earth as a whole from Dormammu’s attacks. The second spell amplifies the Eye of Agamotto to grant power to Doom well beyond anything Doctor Strange ever conceived. Sadly, the power boost isn’t enough when Dormammu summons an army of demons to swarm Doom, strips Doom of his armor, breaks his limbs, and casts him into a nearby river.

Doom summons inhuman strength to destroy the demons and summon the fighting power of the members of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to attack Doom. Still, it’s not enough. The issue ends with the third spell activating, which returns Earth’s heroes, prompting them to rally behind Doom against Dormammu.

First Impressions

The more this event drags on, the less it seems Ryan North has a story to tell or a point to make. One World Under Doom #4 effectively has no purpose other than to demonstrate that Doom is a better Sorcerer Supreme than Doctor Strange while forcing Earth’s heroes to fight for him.

How’s the Art?

R.B. Silva’s artwork is fantastic. There’s no need to mince words. One World Under Doom #4 is one big, magical brawl, and Silva sells it with power, impact, and savagery. If you prioritize art over writing, this issue will be worth the cover price.

What’s great about One World Under Doom #4?

Ryan North’s script at least improves upon the previous three issues by not telling the same story (again) and elevating Doom as a true badass. Sure, you could argue that it seems unlikely Doom would equal and far exceed Doctor Strange’s powers and abilities in such a short time as Sorcerer Supreme, but it’s still impressive to watch.

What’s not great about One World Under Doom #4?

Marvel’s big event isn’t going anywhere, isn’t doing anything, and appears to be treading water. Beyond Ryan North’s allusions to Doom as a stand-in for President Trump, everything Doom has done has been legit, so there’s nowhere for the story to go other than to show Doom overcome challenges in succession. Is that a story? Technically, no. If this event is to be Marvel’s big deal story of 2025, Marvel needs to go back to the drawing board.

Final Thoughts

One World Under Doom #4 is all action and no substance when Dormammu banishes Earth’s heroes to fight Doom solo. Ryan North’s script is little more than an excuse to show how much better Doom is than Doctor Strange, but did anyone really want that? Still, R.B. Silva’s art goes all out to show epic magical battles.
