Gwenpool #1, by Marvel on 5/14/25, “resurrects” Gwen Stacy to become the new Gwenpool so she can fight for, with, and against the other Gwenpool.
Is Gwenpool #1 Good?

Plot Synopsis
We begin with a brief mission prologue as a group of agents infiltrate Weapon X Facility Beta. The agents are quickly mowed down by a darker, edgier version of Gwenpool as a readiness test. Then, Dark Gwenpool’s handler sends her off to her next test – to take down a trio of Deathloks.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man, Kate Bishop, Jeff the Land Shark, and Light Gwenpool do battle with Fin Fang Foom in the heart of NYC. Light Gwenpool leaps into action but is quickly crushed under the dragon’s heel. But wait! Gwenpool actually slipped into the white space between panels, waited for a wide shot panel, and re-entered the comic where she would look like a giant next to the dragon. Light Gwenpool then kicks Fin Fang Foom into orbit.
Jeff the Land Shark runs off, afraid of Light Gwenpool’s escalation of powers. Spider-Man remains behind to help citizens caught in the rubble, while Light Gwenpool and Kate go after Jeff. As they chase, the heroes notice the tone and violence of the comic has gotten darker. Kate loses Light Gwenpool down an alley, but when she catches up, Light Gwenpool is in the middle of a fight with three Deathloks. Spider-Man eventually joins the fight, but the skirmish doesn’t end until Dark Gwenpool suddenly arrives and guns the Deathloks down. When she’s unmasked, everyone is surprised to see that Dark Gwenpool is indeed Gwen Stacy.

First Impressions
Everything about Gwenpool #1 is weirdly, annoyingly obnoxious. From the real-world cultural references Light Gwenpool constantly spouts off that nobody around her understands to the odd appearance of Dark Gwenpool for no apparent reason. This comic screams, “Aren’t I great and funny because I’m so quirky?”
How’s the Art?
Stefano Nasi turns in a banger of an issue. The plot, such as it is, heavily relies on action, chases, and constant movement to keep the story going. It’s fair to say this comic is an art showcase meant to depict Dark Gwenpool and Light Gwenpool in action, so Nesi keeps your eyeballs entertained.
What’s great about Gwenpool #1?
If you’re a fan of Gwenpool, this comic is for you. Cavan Scott cranks the character’s personality up to eleven, throws in adjacent characters such as Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark, since Gwenpool fans are likely fans of those same characters, and sends everyone running in on a zany, Manic Pixie Dream Girl-toned adventure.

What’s not great about Gwenpool #1?
If you’re not a fan of Gwenpool’s zany, Manic Pixie Dream Girl hijinks, real-world reference jokes that nobody around her understands, constant 4th wall breaks, and paper-thin plot, you’re in for a bad time. This comic exemplifies everything annoying and obnoxious about Marvel from the last decade, amplified times ten.

Final Thoughts
Gwenpool #1 is a Gwenpool comic made exclusively for the hardest of diehard Gwenpool fans. Cavan Scott’s paper-thin plot takes a backseat to constant cultural references and 4th Wall-breaking hijinks to give Gwenpool fans everything they could want. Plus, Stefano Nasi’s action-heavy art is better than it has any right to be, given the script.
