Ultimate Wolverine #2, by Marvel Comics on 2/19/25, sends the Winter Soldier into the woods to kill a bunch of soldiers. Yeah, that’s all there is.

Is Ultimate Wolverine #2 Good?

Recap

When we last left Earth-6160’s Logan in Ultimate Wolverine #1, the mutant was brought to Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red – leaders on the Maker’s Council who control the Eurasian Republic region and manage the Ultimate Earth’s mutant population. Colossus subjected Logan to their experimental program to turn lethal mutants into weapons, infusing the berserker with Adamantium. Renamed the Winter Soldier, Logan was sent on a mission to invade and decimate a mutant resistance stronghold and its leaders, starting with Mystique and Nightcrawler.

Plot Synopsis

In Ultimate Wolverine #2, the time of testing commences. In a brief flashback, we see the beginnings of the program that creates Adamantium-infused mutants. One day, thirty years ago, the Maker entered the facility, killed the lead scientist, and burned the research.

Now, the leaders of the Eurasian block speak with Dr. Prostovich regarding her progress on the Directorate X program. She assures them that the Winter Soldier is progressing as promised, but Colossus is skeptical. Winter Soldier shows signs of dreaming while in stasis, so it’s possible his memories have not been wiped completely. Colossus insists on a test.

Later, a contingent of Eurasian soldiers is sent into the woods to find and destroy an unidentified mutant spotted in the area. Likewise, Winter Soldier is sent into the woods to kill any soldier he finds. The issue ends with many men entering but only one man leaving.

First Impressions

Ultimate Wolverine #2 is… fine? Consistent with the rest of the Ultimate titles in the current Hickman-led incarnation, Chris Condon’s tale of woe appears to be taking its time to get to no place in particular. The story serves as a demonstration of Winter Soldier’s lethality, and that’s about it.

How’s the Art?

Marvel readers will recognize Alessandro Cappuccio’s work from his time with Jed MacKay on Moon Knight, so it’s no surprise that Cappuccio brings his A-Game with moody shadows, bold line work, and gritty violence. There’s no complaint about the artwork since it’s a solid match to the frigid steppes of the Eurasian Region where the story takes place.

What’s great about Ultimate Wolverine #2?

If you like to see Wolverine slicing and dicing with brutal efficiency, that’s what you get in Ultimate Wolverine #2. Colossus invents a challenge, and Winter Soldier rises to the occasion. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.

What’s not great about Ultimate Wolverine #2?

Where’s the meat to go with the potatoes? The biggest criticism across all Ultimate titles is the lackadaisical pace and the unwillingness to tell a compelling story while everyone waits for the Maker’s return in the Fall of 2025. Chris Condon made a name for himself with slow-burn stories with a noir bent, such as That Texas Blood and The Enfield Gang Massacre, but that slow-burn noir doesn’t fit a Wolverine comic.

Final Thoughts

Ultimate Wolverine #2 sets up a plausible reason for the Winter Soldier to kill a bunch of soldiers, and that’s it. Chris Condon’s script takes a cue from the rest of the Ultimate titles by foregoing a compelling plot and direction in favor of a slow-burn tale unconcerned with going anywhere anytime soon. Well, at least Alessandro Cappuccio’s art looks great.
