Do you remember his NEW MUTANTS run early on in the DAWN OF X? Well, some plot threads are reexamined relating those two comics that many thought were ignored. Plus, Hickman utilizes characters in his interwoven X-MEN universe correctly. For example, Storm is along for the ride because she’s more than likely exited the MARAUDERS. She’s not double-dipping. Hickman’s not merely using her for pomp, circumstance, and fan favoritism. Readers, I think we are looking at our core three players of the future X-MEN and they are decisive and strong. Storm’s physical prowess is on display in this issue while Jean’s telepathic abilities are not to be messed with.

Speaking of this new team, Marvel is up to something pretty uncanny. At the very end of the issue, it appears as though fans will have an opportunity to “elect” the last member of the new official X-MEN team! Moreover, it appears as though this will be an annual election, which made this reviewer jazzed beyond belief. Therefore, Hickman has built into the comic an element of ever-changing variety, which is an outstanding way to unite the creative team with its fan base while providing them with a voice. FINAL THOUGHTS

As for X-MEN #17 itself, this one-shot contained elements and tones that resembled a more throwback feel. Maybe it was Brett Booth’s illustrations that have always paralleled the late 90s’ early 2000s vibe? Maybe it was the uniforms and the key players? Or, maybe it’s the X-MEN in space concept that excited this reviewer and gave him flashbacks to the days of yore? Either way, this week’s X-MEN was fun, fast, explosive, interconnected, and well worth the read. It’s a quick adventure that I’m sure will spiral back around again in the future knowing Hickman. If you’re curious or interested in the X-MEN, this is a super easy issue to pick up and read without needing an info dump to juggle the motives and outcome.
